What is the GHIC?
The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) allows UK residents to access necessary medical care while travelling in EU countries. It replaces the old EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) after Brexit.
With a GHIC, you’re entitled to free or discounted state-provided healthcare during temporary stays in the EU — such as holidays, business trips, or short-term study abroad.
The GHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance, but it gives you access to local healthcare under the same terms as local citizens in the country you visit.
What Does the GHIC Cover?
• Emergency medical treatment
• Visits to GPs and clinics
• Treatment for pre-existing conditions
• Maternity care (not planned births abroad)
• Oxygen and kidney dialysis (must be pre-booked)
• Accident or injury treatment during your trip
It does not cover private healthcare, mountain rescue, repatriation (flights home), or cruise ship care — so travel insurance is still strongly recommended
Where Can You Use the GHIC?
The GHIC is valid in EU member states, including:
• France
• Spain
• Germany
• Italy
• Portugal
• Netherlands
(plus all other EU countries)
It does not currently cover non-EU countries like Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein — unless you’re eligible under specific circumstances (e.g. S1 form holders).
Who Can Apply for a GHIC?
To apply for a GHIC, you must meet the following criteria:
• Be ordinarily resident in the UK
• Not already covered by another country’s healthcare system
• Have a valid National Insurance number (for adults)
• Be a UK citizen, EU/EEA citizen living in the UK, or legally residing in the UK
• Family members (spouse, civil partner, children under 18) can also be included on the application if they live at the same address
How Long Is the GHIC Valid?
The GHIC is valid for up to 5 years from the date of issue. You can renew your card when it expires, and you should apply well before travelling — it can take several weeks to arrive.
Why You Should Get a GHIC?
Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or staying in Europe for work or study, having a GHIC ensures that you can access essential medical care without large out-of-pocket costs.
It’s peace of mind — and an important part of travel preparation for all UK residents.
