GHIC Card — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about applying for, using, and replacing your Global Health Insurance Card.
General Questions
What is a GHIC card?
The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) allows UK residents to access state healthcare in EU countries at the same cost as local residents. It replaced the EHIC after Brexit.
Is the GHIC card free?
Our service charges a handling and submission fee to manage your application on your behalf.
Is the GHIC the same as travel insurance?
No. The GHIC covers medically necessary state healthcare. Travel insurance covers additional costs like repatriation, private treatment, and cancellations. You should have both.
How long is a GHIC card valid for?
Up to 5 years. Children’s cards may have shorter validity.
Can I use my old EHIC card?
Yes, until it expires. Once expired, you need a GHIC.
Eligibility
Who can apply for a GHIC card?
UK residents with a valid National Insurance number. This includes UK citizens, EU/EEA nationals with settled or pre-settled status.
Can children get a GHIC card?
Yes. Every individual needs their own card. Children can be included in a family application.
Can I apply for my whole family at once?
Yes. Our service allows up to 10 family members in one application.
Do I need an NHS number to apply?
An NHS number is helpful but not always required. A National Insurance number is the key requirement.
Which countries accept the GHIC?
All EU member states including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Greece, Netherlands, and more.
Does the GHIC cover pre-existing conditions?
Yes — for medically necessary treatment related to those conditions while abroad.
Does the GHIC cover pregnancy?
Yes, for urgent maternity care. It does not cover planned births abroad.
Does the GHIC cover private hospitals?
No. It only covers state-provided healthcare.
